A Taste of Eastern Europe Opens in Naples
Naples Daily News - FL, Tuesday, January 06, 2009 |
| |
|
Rabbi Fishel Zaklos, director of the Chabad Jewish Center of Naples, while not endorsing this market because he was not familiar with it, said kosher foods are hard to come by. His personal groceries and those for the center are trucked in twice a month from Daytona Beach. Having had grandparents from Eastern Europe, food from the region evokes memories of community and tradition, he said. “The fact that there is this type of store ... is actually a representation of our community and the uniqueness to it,” Zaklos said. “We all stem from different corners of the world and we’re coming here to acknowledge and unite the people coming from different places.” |

Zaklikovsky reminded the gathering they should not take for granted the religious freedoms they enjoy as Americans. He noted that in Monroe alone, three menoras had been erected on public land with the full blessing of the municipalities. “We live in a culture where different religions and nationalities can come together to celebrate,” said Zaklikovsky. “As we celebrate Hanukka today, we must remember there are places in the world where there is not freedom of religion, where there is darkness.” |

Finding Jewish Soul Brothers, Kosher Eats in Bangkok
Cleveland Jewish News - OH, Friday, January 02, 2009 |
| |
|
In both places, plus two others in Thailand, as well as in Laos and Vietnam, there are established Chabad Houses, where one can find sustenance, both culinary and spiritual, as well as convenient access to Internet and telephone lines. Our Shabbat experience at the Ohr Menachem Chabad House in Bangkok was almost surrealistic: Hundreds of young backpackers, the vast majority of them young Israelis traveling during their post-army wandering ritual, stream into the multi-story Chabad House in the seedy and raucous Khao San Road area of Thailand’s capital city every Friday evening to partake in a festive Shabbat dinner. |

Merrick's Chabad center has taken steps to fulfill Holtzberg's vision, creating the Mumbai Scholarship Memorial Fund, which will benefit preschool children.
